Finding Sacred in the Mundane

You may have heard the words- Before enlightenment fetch wood, carry water; after enlightenment fetch wood, carry water. We all have our daily chores, as human beings we have to meet our basic needs to stay alive, so beginning to bring the sacred into these tasks connects you to Spirit. Honouring and celebrating what we see as mundane brings gratitude for what we have and compassion for others. It is finding peace.

In a world of busyness, there is a lot of pressure to perform, especially within deadlines. We are slaves to the clock, and often shape our lives accordingly. Some thrive on this energy but many feel overwhelmed by exhaustion, and begin to rely on stimulants and sedatives to make it through. It can take a while to restructure your life to bring less pressure, and sometimes it may require looking closely at what you want to achieve.

Functioning in a high pressure existence means finding a balance, taking time to refill your cup so you aren’t depleting your reserves, perhaps strengthening your personal boundaries so you aren’t taking on more than you can handle. Taking time to breathe. To relax, to slow down. Become the master of your own time.

No matter what we do, as human beings we all need to tend to our bodies, to our survival, which means having food and shelter, keeping healthy with regular exercise, a creative outlet, and a social structure of support and enjoyment. One of the most important things in my eyes is to find a spiritual connection, to become aware of the energies around us, within us,

To find the sacred in each moment. It brings a softening, a gentleness to the soul, when we take a moment to connect to the beauty around us. When we bring that gentleness to each task we perform, we open the space of gratitude. We recognise that appreciating the day brings us happiness and joy. Our personal relationships improve and we work smarter not harder.

Some ways to bring the sacred into the mundane can be to simply acknowledge the moment. Notice what you have instead of what you don’t have, how people have supported you instead of deceived you. Seeing the silver lining of what you have created for yourself, and if you are unhappy with what you have created, looking at what you can change, and taking action.

We are responsible for how we react, but we are also creators. Our attitude allows us to find joy or chaos. It is our choice.
